REVIEW ELF waterproof eyeliner pen vs Avon liquid eyeliner pen vs ELF gel liner

Here is the war of the liners. No not really. But if you're not much of a collectionist, you might not want to go out there and buy the whole lot of liners.

AVON liquid eyeliner in black*

THE GOOD:

  • the packaging: love that you twist it to open rather than pull it
  • the tip: the tip has a very fine tip, can be used to create the liner as thick or thin as you would like
  • the removal: given that you don't need much effort to smudge it off, you don't even need a make up remover to take it off. And yes. I'm being sarcastic.

THE BAD:

  • lasting power: horrible, perhaps 1hour before starting to fade away
  • smudging: smudges really really easily,
  • not waterproof: it is easily removed with water running
  • the shade: dark green/ grey shade
  • buildability: not buildable, as soon as you build it up, you swipe off the previous swipe. Brilliant invention. Haha.
  • the tip: a bit too stiff, not very easy to use

OVERALL RATING: 0.5/5 [that's for the packaging]

BOTTOM LINE: Don't buy. Seriously save your money ..

ELF waterproof eyeliner pen in black

THE GOOD:

  • the shade: an awesome black, not overly intense [although I wouldn't mind an overly intense black] – it is a true black though
  • the packaging: it is small, thin and cute
  • the tip: very easy to use
  • smudging: not very easy to smudge, unless wet
  • waterproof: waterproof, unless smudging it while wet
  • removal: easy to remove w/ any make up remover
  • mistake proof: very easy to work with

THE BAD
  • the packaging: the way to have to open this and close it. Horrible. I literally bent the tip at one point. You have to pull really hard to openit, I rub the tip against my hand almost everytime I use this. THIS IS A BIG DEAL TO ME.
  • storage: you have to keep this upside down, otherwise the tip will dry
  • the formula: waterproof, but don't you dare rub your eye while wet.

OVERALL RATING: 4/5 [lost point on: the way you have to open it, upright storage- not so good for travelling, waterproof but no smudging while wet]

BOTTOM LINE: A good buy, But ELF can work on the way you have to open it. I love it and tend to go for it quite often. I prefer this over the ELF cream liner, because the latter is much much harder to take off.

ELF cream liner in black

THE GOOD
  • the formula: brilliant – no smudging, waterproof, no smudging while wet
  • free brush: very good but I prefer a longer brush – the free brush is really good because it does the job and you don't have to buy another one.
  • Smudging: no smudging
  • mistake proof: very easy to work with
  • amount of product: a LOT of product
  • packaging: very simple and travel friendly, [brush problems aside.]
  • you can use this in the innercorner of the eyes with ease

THE BAD

  • removal: a PAIN to remove
  • brush cleaning: the brush [any brush] that comes in contact with this product is soooo hardto clean
  • I don't find it very very good for a good winged out liner

OVERALL RATING: 4.5/5

UPDATE: I used the avon liquid liner with the elf cream liner, it worked brilliantly :D

BOTTOM LINE: I think this is still my favourite liner from ELF. The waterproof eyeliner pen comes really close, because I can get a more precise application and an easier wing. But if I hard to recommend one – get the cream liner, as it is both waterproof and smudgeproof and smudge resistant while wet. It really is a pain to remove though. It depends on the individual though, you might prefer the waterproof eyeliner pen.

I am planning to use the tip of the waterproof eyeliner pen with the cream liner to see how that works once I finish the waterproof eyeliner pen. I'm not gonna do it now because I fear I'll block the tip with the product of the cream liner. I'll let you know how that works for me. It would be great if it worked nicely, as it could work as a portable brush in my travel make up bag.

EDIT!!: I no longer use the waterproof eyeliner pen by ELF as the product is not coming out all that well. I will probably use the pen to apply elf's gel liner. I already am using the avon liquid liner pen to apply the ELF gel liner :)

  1. i started with the cream liner and thought it was amazing, but after using the eyeliner pen i think it is better/ more precise and easier to get the "winged" effect. both great products though

  2. I agree a 100%. But if I'm going to wear liner and I'm going to be swimming, I'll definitely opt for the elf cream liner instead. But yep. The elf waterproof eyeliner pen really is much much easier to work with. :)

Thank you for commenting, it's nice to see things in a different perspective :)

  3. I have not tested my elf cream eyeliner yet. But I totaly agree on the waterproof liner. I love it. But not how you open it. I have the same problem swiping the tip on my fingers when opening it. Because you really have to pull HARD. Somedays when I'm in a hurry I do not have time to try to open it.

  4. Thanks for reviewing this! It really helped me stick to my decision to order the cream liner. (: I've never ordered from ELF, so my fingers are crossed!
